Pienza

The ideal region of Italy – Tuscany is usually considered as the land of wine hills. Their picturesque chains with vineyards and olive groves are the “picture” of Tuscany that we know from the masterpieces of Renaissance painting, modern cinema like Bertolucci’s “Slipping Beauty”, or just tourist postcards. In Tuscany, however, in addition to the hills, there are other types of landscape: the plentiful plain near Pisa, the high Apennine Mountains (with its own winter ski resorts), protecting Tuscany from the north and east winds.

No less beautiful is the sea coast of Tuscany, which stretches from North Tuscan Versilia to South Tuscan Argentario for almost three hundred kilometers. With the question: “which sea washes the Tuscan shores”, however, not everything is so clean.

According to the International Hydrographic Organization, as well as the Italian Hydrographic Institute in Genoa, the northern half of the Tuscan coast up to Piombino is washed by the Ligurian Sea, and the southern half of the Tuscan coast is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea. With this statement categorically disagree residents of Tuscany with their typical for all Italians regional patriotism. In their opinion, the entire Tuscan coast is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and its border with the Ligurian Sea falls on the Gulf of La Spezia in the southernmost part of Liguria.

Blue Flag beaches in Tuscany. In terms of the number of the best beaches in the country, Tuscany is officially recognized as the Italian “vicechampion“. In the prestigious ranking of “Beaches of Blue Flag 2020” of the International Foundation for Environmental Education, first place was taken by Liguria with 32 beaches, followed by Tuscany with 20 beaches of Blue Flag. Campania and Marche ranked third and fourth.

Versilia

Versilia is a northwestern “corner” of Tuscany squeezed between the mountains and the sea. Here are located the most fashionable resorts in Tuscany and some of the most luxurious in all of Italy: Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio, Marina di Massa, Marina di Pietrasanta, Lido di Camaiore. Most foreign tourists, when choosing where to relax on the sea in Tuscany or even in Italy in general, go to Versilia. Until the end of the 19th century, this area was the land of fishermen, peasants, and stonemasons who mined marble in the mountains of neighboring Carrara. With the development of beach tourism at the end of the XIX century, seaside towns of Versilia turned into centers of summer vacation for Tuscan and European high society. Despite some geographical and historical periphery concerning the rest of Tuscany, here are all the main things that Italy is famous for – ancient history and cultural tradition, delicacies and wines, rich and diverse nature, where the two elements: the sea and the mountains neighbor.

All resort towns of Versilia have now merged into a solid resort area with a single beach promenade, which stretches for more than two dozen kilometers. On one side of it are private beaches, on the other – the best in Tuscany resort discos, hotels, stores and boutiques, restaurants and cafes. From here you can easily reach the magnificent medieval cities of Lucca and Pisa, (in Pisa is also the main airport of Tuscany). A little more time will take the road to Florence or southern Liguria, where the famous Cinque Terre nature reserve and the sea town of Portovenere, one of the most picturesque in Italy, are located. In addition to the Pisa airport, Versilia is easily accessible from the airports of Genoa, Florence, Bologna, and Milan. The wide sandy beaches of all the resorts of Versilia are equipped and paid, there are only few hotels with their own beaches – so you should plan in advance the cost of beach places, or choose a hotel with its own beach. The sea here is very shallow for the joy of parents with small children, but to the disappointment of inveterate swimmers.

Forte dei Marmi
Where to stay in Forte dei Marmi
Forte dei Marmi, now the “mecca” of international elite tourism in Italy, is a luxurious resort town with a population of about ten thousand people. The town owes its name to a small fortified port, built in 1788 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold I to export marble blocks mined nearby. Today, Forte dei Marmi is a meeting place for the “captains” of international finance and multinational companies, celebrities from the world of pop music and cinema, wealthy athletes, the nouveau riches, aristocrats, rentiers, etc. Wealthy tourists are attracted here by the unique natural conditions – the contrast of the snow-white marble peaks of the Apuan Alps, the blue sea and wide beaches; by the chamber scale of Forte dei Marmi ideal for families and children; by the wide range of luxury hotels, restaurants, boutiques, sports opportunities, etc.

Marina di Massa – Cinquale
Where to stay in Marina di Massa – Cinquale
To the north of Forte dei Marmi is located the resort “branch” of the city of Massa – its “marina“. A characteristic feature of the coast of this Marina is that, unlike the neighboring rivieres, along almost all eight kilometers of its coastline there are more than a dozen artificial malls perpendicular to the coast and going into the sea for tens of meters. The malls have been filled up to soften the erosion of the sandy shore. The first bathing establishments and aristocratic villas (such as the famous Villa Corsi, Villa Doria, and Villa Franca) appeared in Marina di Massa at the beginning of the 20th century. Marina di Massa still boasts a large selection of luxury holiday villas, many of which are rented out.

Viareggio – Torre del Lago
Where to Stay in Viareggio
One of the first sea resorts that appeared in Italy at the end of the 19th century was Viareggio – up to now its main promenade is decorated with historical villas, hotels and restaurants built in the “liberty” style (Italian analog of “art nouveau”). Until now Viareggio is the largest resort town in Versilia with the largest number of hotels, beaches and restaurants, whose prices are much more democratic than in the “oligarchic” Forte dei Marmi. Besides, Viareggio is known not only as a seaside resort but also as a shipbuilding and fishing center, as well as the site of the famous carnival, held here annually since 1873 in February.

Torre del Lago Puccini is located between Lake Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian Sea, along which stretch the famous private beaches Lido, Stella Polare, Lido Andrea Doria, which opened at the beginning of the twentieth century. To the north (towards Viareggio) they are replaced by wild beaches. Every year in July and August, the Torre del Lago Open Theater hosts the famous Puccini Festival, one of the most important events in the Italian classical music calendar.

Pisa beach resorts – Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia, Calambrone

Where to stay in Tirrenia
Many residents of the Tuscany region, instead of the world-famous resorts of Versilia, choose the Pisan resorts of Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Calambrone. Their choice is due to two reasons: firstly, the rest on local equipped beaches is much cheaper than in Versilia, and the choice of beaches, restaurants, and discos here is quite extensive; secondly, in contrast to the beaches of Versilia, where it is very shallow, on the coast of Pisa the sea is deeper.

Marina di Pisa
The resort town of Marina di Pisa is built up mainly with private mansions of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. To the north, Marina di Pisa is bordered by the Arno River, whose southern bank was turned into a jetty for private motor and sailing yachts for several kilometers. At the mouth of the Arno, a new tourist port has recently been opened, capable of receiving large private yachts. Free beaches with white marble pebbles stretch along the entire promenade of Marina di Pisa, overlooking either the open and deep sea or the breakwater-covered “paddling pools. Private beaches begin only in the southern part of the Marina.

Tirrenia and Calambrone

Tirrenia, immersed in the green of the pine groves, is rather a forest settlement stretching along the sea. The resort was founded in 1932 by the order of Mussolini, who was going to turn it into “Italian Hollywood” – the cinematic capital of Italy. Today in Tirrenia there is a well-developed sports infrastructure, a golf club with a 4 * apartment-hotel Cosmopolitan Golf & Beach Resort, opportunities for horse riding and sea sports.

In Calambrone, during the time of Mussolini, on the site of the swampy coast and dunes, the six so-called colonies were built for the children of industrial workers. The “colonies” are now recognized among the most interesting monuments of Italian rationalism. After the war, the colonies in Calambrone were replaced by hotel complexes and private buildings. The beaches of Calambrone are considered some of the best sandy beaches in mainland Italy.

Nortern Maremma – Etruscan Coast

The southern half of the Tuscan coast (the provinces of the cities of Grosseto and Livorno) almost entirely belongs to the so-called Maremma. This geographical toponym has an ambiguous reputation, in the local dialect even today there is a curse word “maremma” (literally a sea marsh, a shore submerged by the sea). The fact is that the Maremma, which once became the heart of the Etruscan civilization, and then flourished in the ancient Roman era, in the Middle Ages was infected with malaria, and abandoned by the local population for several centuries. It was not until the early 20th century that the problem of malaria was finally solved, after which the Maremma’s economic boom began. This region, however, is still the most sparsely populated part of Tuscany with a rich and diverse nature: coastal dunes, pine seaside groves – “pinetas”, rocks in the Argentario area, a fertile plain, sloping hills and even a volcano sleeping under Mount Amiata. Also, the Maremma is famous for its great wines – the famous SuperTuscan wines, including the “best wine in the world” Sassicaia from Bolgheri, fine classic wines like Morellino di Scansano or Montecucco – “sister” and neighbor of the great Brunello di Montalcino and many others.

Where to stay in Etruscan Coast – hotels
Where to stay in Etruscan Coast – village resorts

Maremma resorts are a popular family holiday destination among Italians. Unlike the resorts of Versilia and Pisa, which are conglomerates of coastal towns united by a single promenade-passage, the resort towns of Maremma are rather seaside villages, at a respectful distance from each other scattered along the sea among the endless Maremman “pineta” – a vast strip of reserved pine parks. The clean and deep sea of Maremma, with its endless sandy beaches marked by the famous ‘blue flags’, differs favorably from the shallow sea in Versilia. Almost all hotels in the Maremma have their own equipped beaches, already included in the price of accommodation, which alternate with free “wild” areas available to everyone.
The northern part of the Maremma – the province of Livorno, also called the Etruscan Coast (Costa degli Etruschi), stretching from Castiglioncello to Piombino, is a seaside holiday destination with a very convenient location for trips and excursions to almost all cities in Tuscany. The railway and motorway connecting Pisa and Rome (and their airports) run along the sea almost all along its length.

Castiglioncello is a resort town near Livorno with rocky coves and small beaches. In the 1960s, Castiglioncello was the favourite local holiday destination of Marcello Mastroianni and other representatives of the Italian cinema and art bohemia world.
Just south of Castiglioncello, the famous Maremma beaches begin, among which the famous snow-white beaches of Vada, followed by holiday and countryside towns and villages with good infrastructure for family tourism: Marina di Cecina, Marina di Bibbona, Marina di Castagneto Carducci where Italian families with children mainly rest. There is an amusement park, children’s playgrounds with inflatable trampolines and a large water park. The resorts are located about an hour’s drive from Pisa Airport and are convenient for excursions to Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano, wine tastings in Bolgheri and Suvereto, or even Montecucco and Montalcino.

San Vincenzo is the largest resort town on the Etruscan Coast. It even has its own “promenade” – the main street with boutiques, cafes and restaurants, where many events take place in summer. The newly opened marina for private yachts has become a favorite destination for walks and evening aperitifs among tourists. Between San Vincenzo and the ancient Etruscan town of Populonia, with its medieval towers offering a magnificent view of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, there is the famous Baratti Bay with beautiful beaches, dunes, “pineta” and a marina for boats and yachts.

Where to stay on the Etruscan Coast – Village-Hotels
The main type of hotel structures on the Etruscan Coast are not classic seaside hotels, but large tourist complexes designed for recreation with children, the so-called Turistic Villages, which can be both resident hotels and campsites. Usually, guests of the “villages” are offered a full range of services on the territory of one gated complex – accommodation in apartments, rooms or bungalows, private beaches, swimming pools, restaurants, bars and supermarkets, children’s clubs with animation and playgrounds. Here are some of them:

The Park Hotel Marinetta Village Resort is located in Marina di Bibbona in a park with its own beach. It offers a wellness center, indoor and outdoor pools with restaurants, spa – booking.com

Elba and the Tuscan archipelago

The islands of the Tuscan archipelago Gorgona, Capraia, Giannutri, Pianosa, Giglio, Montecristo and Elba are scattered along the entire coast of the Maremma. The largest of them is the beautiful Elba, the place of exile of Napoleon in 1814-1815. Elba is a mountainous and rocky island with a clear sea, a large selection of hotels, villas and apartments and a mass of options for different types of recreation. In addition to the beautiful and generous nature and rich history, Elba also boasts its own wine appellation of the highest DOCG category Elba Aleatico Passito.
The small island of Giglio, with its rocky shores and crystal clear sea, is also easily accessible from the seaside resorts of Monte Argentario

Lower Maremma – Province of Grosseto

The southernmost part of the Tuscan coastline is characterized by pristine nature and secluded rest (the population density in the province of Grosseto is almost ten times lower than in the provinces of Florence or Pisa) and relative remoteness from transport arteries – the highway and railway pass here at a respectful distance from the sea.

All the above, however, does not apply to the northernmost Grossetan resort – the rather large coastal town of Follonica with a railway station, promenade, shopping and a large selection of hotels and apartments.
